I absolutely love what Dr. Pat love says in this video about longing. When we long for something so deeply (especially in childhood), and do not receive it, it becomes a source of pain. This is a huge reason why people continue toxic patterns from childhood. We want healthy, thriving, loving connections with others, but we can push these connections away because receiving what we have longed for after living so long without it brings back the memories of pain and desperation.
In order to receive what we are longing for, we have to feel the feelings fully and accept the grief. And then do what we know is right. Feel the pain of accepting what was lost in the past and open yourself up to receiving it in the present.
